GUSTAV
KLIMT

In the opulent works of his “Golden Period” figurines and ornaments are melting to become compositions of unique sensuality. The cofounder of the “Vienna Secession” combines the various movements of the international Art Nouveau in his splendid paintings and thus becomes one of the most important representatives. Beyond all temporal and spatial bounds his most famous painting “The Kiss” is considered the “Allegory of Love” as such.
No other artist has so decisively marked the beautiful face of the
French Belle Epoque. After having created his first poster for the
famous actress Sarah Bernhardt the Czech artist enjoyed a meteoric
career and was dominating the design of the turn of the century.
In his paintings he stylizes pretty women and charming plants
to an ornament of timeless aesthetics.

CLAUDE
MONET

We owe one of his pictures the name of an art
movement that left the most beautiful landscape
paintings in history to one of his pictures:
impressionism. Monet loved to paint
outside. Like no other he was able to catch
the magic of the moment in his paintings and
fix it on canvas forever: sunbeams playing on
gleaming water surfaces, light and shadow in
the foliage of trees or the shining colours of a
summer garden.

Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges and started his artistic career as a Porcelain painter. In Paris he became friends with the impressionists around Claude Monet. Flowers, children and young women soon became his favourite motifs. Full of light and grace his works are an eternal hymn to beauty and joy of life.

AUGUSTE
RENOIR

Today his paintings belong to the most expensive
of the world - but he spent his life in
extreme poverty and financial dependency.
Vincent van Gogh was a desperate man but
an obsessed artist, never reached in genius -
an exception - like his vigorous paintings that
seem to sparkle from inside.

Jan Davidsz de Heem was a still life painter and one of a major represen-tatives of Dutch Baroque painting, combining a brilliance and harmony of colour with an accurate rendering of objects: flowers in all their variety; European and tropical fruits; butterflies and insects; stone and metal. More than one hundred of his paintings can be seen in the biggest European galleries such as the Belvedere Vienna, Berlin Museum, Alte Pinakothek Munich, Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels.

Katsushika Hokusai, born in 1760 in today’s
city of Tokyo, started an apprenticeship as
wood-carver at the age of 15. The series “Thirty-Six
Views of Mount Fuji” became his most popular
work. It includes the famous “Great
Wave off Kanagawa”.
In his homeland Japan,
Hokusai’s work was rather considered as
“everyday graphics”, whereas in Europe his
art contributed to Japonism, inspired artists
like Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Egon
Schiele and Gustav Klimt and also influenced
Art Nouveau.

Wassily Kandinsky - Russian painter, graphic designer and art theorist - is one of the great pioneers of art. In his versatile work, he describes the psychological effect of colour and the analogy between painting and music. Kandinsky lived and worked also in Germany and France. During the German Weimar republic, he was a teacher at the German art school “Bauhaus” in Weimar, Dessau and Berlin. Today, his works of art are exhibited in many great museums, i.e. Lenbachhaus Munich, Guggenheim New York, Louvre and Centre Pompidou Paris.
